If our dentists recommend removing a tooth, the reason is that we've exhausted all treatment options to save it.

Some instances where tooth extraction is indicated are:

  • Extensive decay has damaged a tooth beyond repair
  • A badly infected tooth can't be saved with root canal treatment
  • A tooth is broken off below the gumline, and we can't restore it
  • One or more wisdom teeth cause crowding or are impacted (stuck) in the gums
  • Advanced gum disease has loosened a tooth, and the only option is to remove it

Our dentists may also recommend removing some teeth for the best results when planning for orthodontic treatment, dental implants, or full denture placement.

If we recommend tooth extraction, we will explain why we believe it's in your best interest and be happy to answer all your questions.

Stress-Free, Pain-Free Oral Surgery in Coeur d'Alene

Whether we recommend simple extraction or oral surgery, our kind and supportive dental team goes above and beyond to ensure a comfortable, stress-free procedure. We also use strong local anesthetics to numb the tooth for a pain-free procedure.

NIDG also offers all levels of sedation dentistry for patients with dental anxiety or those who want to relax during their procedure. Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and oral conscious sedation are ideal for mild to moderate dental anxiety, while IV sedation and general anesthesia work well for severe anxiety. Both are administered safely by a licensed dental anesthesiologist at our Coeur d'Alene and Ponderay dental offices.

Oral Surgery Procedures Near Sandpoint

We also offer other oral surgery procedures as needed for successful dental implant placement.

Bone Grafting

A patient who wants a dental implant must have sufficiently dense bone in the jaw to support it. When this isn't the case, we use bone grafting to supplement existing bone and provide a healthy base for the implant. Our dentists can also perform bone grafting immediately after tooth extraction.

Sometimes, there isn't enough bone around the sinuses where we need to place the implant. In this case, our dentists would recommend a sinus lift or sinus augmentation that involves lifting the sinuses and adding bone grafting material to build up the area.

Bone grafting and sinus lift procedures require a healing period of several months, after which our dentists can plan and perform successful implant placement.

Ridge Preservation

For patients who are having a tooth extraction and plan to get an implant, we recommend ridge preservation. This is a type of bone grafting procedure done at the time of extraction to preserve bone and ridge contour in preparation for implant placement in the future.

Frequently Asked Questions

Even if you go to the dentist twice a year and practice good oral hygiene, there may come a time when your dentist recommends a dental extraction. You will probably have questions about what the extraction process in Coeur d’Alene or Sandpoint will entail, and you will also want to know why your tooth needs to be extracted in the first place.

tooth extraction What Are the Reasons for Tooth Extraction?

There are a variety of reasons you might need to have a tooth extracted, including the following:

  • Impaction – Tooth impaction occurs when one of your teeth is pushing against another tooth, so to maintain the integrity of your teeth, the tooth causing the problem may need to be removed.
  • Overcrowding – If certain teeth are overcrowding other teeth, it can affect your teeth’s alignment, and you might have to get braces to correct the problem. Tooth extraction might be a better option.
  • Tooth decay – When plaque and tartar build-up on your teeth, they can deteriorate your tooth’s enamel. If too much deterioration occurs, you may need a tooth extraction.
  • Periodontal or gum disease – Similar to tooth decay, plaque, and tartar can build up along your gumline; as a result, excessive bone or gum erosion may make it impossible to hold your tooth in place, and your dentist may have to extract the tooth.
  • Trauma – If you suffer an injury or accident, your tooth could experience trauma and require removal.
