Emergency Dentists in Coeur d'Alene and Sandpoint
We understand how upsetting, painful, and frustrating a dental emergency can be. We've all been there and know what it's like to be in pain, need help, and not be sure what to do next.
Same-Day Emergency Dentistry in Coeur d'Alene
At North Idaho Dental Group, our priority is to get our emergency patients out of pain as quickly as possible. If you have severe tooth pain, jaw swelling, or another urgent situation, call our Coeur d'Alene or Sandpoint area dental office right away so our emergency dentists can help you.
We will see you the same day to relieve your pain and ensure your situation is stable. If we can't resolve the underlying issue that day, we will schedule you for our next open appointment when we have more time to provide the high-quality dentistry you deserve.
What Constitutes a Dental Emergency?
For the sake of your oral and general health, our dentists want to know if anything out of the ordinary occurs with your dental health. As far as what constitutes a dental emergency, the following situations indicate that you need prompt emergency dentistry.
Severe Tooth Pain
A mild, intermittent toothache may only be annoying and uncomfortable but should still be treated as soon as possible.
If you are experiencing tooth pain that's so severe that you can't function normally, you may have a deep cavity, root canal infection, or abscess. Call us right away, and we will see you that day to diagnose the problem and relieve your pain.
Until you see us, control the pain with a cold compress, swish warm salt water around your mouth, or take an OTC pain reliever like ibuprofen.
Dental Trauma
If you suffer dental trauma in an accident or during sports activities, we need to see you as soon as possible. If you have a knocked-out tooth, we have less than two hours to try to replace it.
Hold the tooth by the crown and don't touch the root. Keep the root moist by holding the tooth in your mouth between your cheek and gums or placing it in a container of milk or saliva. Do NOT use tap water!
Lost Dental Crown or Filling
A lost crown is an emergency, and we should see you as soon as possible, even if it's not painful. Waiting too long can lead to further damage that may become involved and costly to repair.
With a lost filling, gather up the broken pieces and bring them to your emergency dental appointment.
Root Canal Infection or Dental Abscess
An infected or abscessed tooth is an urgent dental emergency because it can become life-threatening if not treated promptly. Signs include an excruciating toothache, gum swelling or tenderness near the tooth, jaw pain, pus discharge, or a bad taste in your mouth.
Don't Postpone Emergency Dental Treatment!
Many people avoid dental visits at all costs, but postponing treatment because of anxiety is never a good idea. Toothaches and infections don't heal themselves and can damage your oral health, requiring even more dental visits to correct them.
Trust the experienced dentists and dental team at North Idaho Dental Group, who are kind, gentle, and non-judgemental. All we want is to relieve your pain and provide treatment to protect your long-term oral health.

Frequently Asked Questions
The first thing to do if you break a tooth is to make an appointment to see your emergency dentist. North Idaho Dental Group has offices in Coeur d’Alene and Ponderay, where we offer prompt same-day emergency dentistry.
If you break a tooth on the weekend or on vacation, you can buy temporary tooth repair products at the local drugstore. This material will temporarily fill the space and protect your tongue and cheeks from sharp edges that may be present.
Avoid chewing on the broken tooth as it is vulnerable to further damage.
Why We Need to Treat a Broken Tooth
Even if a broken tooth is not painful, you should still come in and see us. A tooth that’s already compromised can sustain further damage that may be more costly and complex to repair than treatment performed at the time of the injury.
A cracked or broken tooth left untreated can also lead to a pulp infection that would require a root canal to resolve.

Emergency Dental Care Technology
Electric Handpieces
We embrace any technology that improves patient comfort, minimizes anxiety, and helps us work more efficiently. If you dislike hearing the ear-piercing, high-pitched whine of an air-driven handpiece, we know you will appreciate our quiet electric handpieces.
Electric handpieces are quieter than air-driven, produce less vibration, and are gentler on teeth. When removing decay and preparing for dental fillings, our dentists can work with greater precision and leave more healthy tooth structure intact.
