Boat Snacks, Chewing Ice, and Other Summer Habits Your Teeth Don’t Love

Summer road trips, lake days, camping weekends, and convenience-store snacks are part of the season’s fun. Unfortunately, some very common warm-weather habits can be surprisingly rough on your teeth. From crunching soda fountain ice at the gas station to sipping sugary drinks all day on the boat, seemingly mundane choices can increase the risk of dental cracks, sensitivity, and cavities over time.

At North Idaho Dental Group, Dr. Ben Gates and our caring team help patients mindfully protect their smiles without sacrificing the little things that make summer fun in North Idaho.

Summer Snacks Can Be Tough on Teeth

Many popular road trip and lake snacks are loaded with sugar, acids, or hard textures that stress enamel. Chewing ice from your soda or iced coffee cup is especially risky because it can chip enamel, crack fillings, or damage crowns. Other common summer culprits include:

  • Frequently consuming sports/energy drinks
  • Ice cream and sticky candies
  • Cracking sunflower seeds with teeth
  • Forgetting to brush after snacking

Dry Mouth and Dehydration Matter Too

Saliva plays an important role in neutralizing acids and washing away bacteria, so dehydration may increase cavity risk. Hot weather, outdoor activity, and sugary or caffeinated drinks all contribute to dry mouth

The good news is that some simple adjustments can help protect enamel during busy summer months. Here are a few summer habits that can help:

  • Drinking more water than usual throughout the day
  • Rinsing after acidic beverages
  • Limiting continuous sugary sipping
  • Packing tooth-friendly snacks like cheese or nuts

Don’t Ignore Summer Tooth Pain

Sensitivity, swelling, or sudden pain should not be dismissed simply because you’re traveling or busy. Dental problems worsen, often quickly, without treatment and can more harshly interrupt plans without treatment.
